A Hard Drive Full of Almost : Producer Guide

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you have a folder sitting in a quiet corner of your computer. Inside it sits an endless sea of half-finished tracks. Some are sketches, some are experiments, and some of them are actually really good. But they all have one thing in common… they’ll keep sitting there, unvisited for weeks and months, until you eventually forget about them.

I know this because I was one of those producers.

After nearly 30 years of making music, I’ve been through every version of this. The half-finished sessions that never went anywhere. The tracks you keep reopening and changing nothing. The ones you abandoned because you couldn’t stop second-guessing what to do next.

Most producers I know share the same quiet graveyard of half-finished tracks. And the reasons behind it go much deeper than procrastination or lack of talent.

I put this guide together for two reasons. To help producers understand why it happens, and how to get through it.
